Is It Safe to Let AI Read Your Kids' School Emails?

By Aurion team · Last updated:

School emails carry a lot: dates, forms, teacher names, sometimes a note about your child. Handing that to an AI tool is a fair thing to think twice about. Before you share school emails with any tool, start with who gets the final say over your family's plans — then check access, retention, training versus processing, and how you can leave.

1. Who decides what gets added to the calendar?

Check whether the tool shows you suggestions before changing a shared plan. A school email can leave room for interpretation, and AI can get details wrong.

Aurion is a Family Agent. It proposes preparation steps and reminders; nothing is written to the shared calendar until someone approves. You review the suggested plan before it becomes part of the family schedule. See Approving suggestions.

2. Do I have to connect my inbox?

Look for a way to share individual messages if you would rather choose each email yourself.

Aurion offers two paths:

  • Forward selected emails to your dedicated Aurion address, without connecting your inbox.
  • Connect an inbox with read-only access. Aurion does not send, delete, label or archive messages in your mailbox.

Read-only describes what Aurion can do to your mailbox. It does not mean access is limited to school emails. If you'd rather Aurion only ever sees school mail, forward just those emails (you can set a Gmail filter for your school's senders — see Get school emails in).

Email connections include Gmail, iCloud Mail, Microsoft Outlook, Yahoo Mail and other IMAP mailboxes. See What does Aurion work with?.

3. How long are the emails kept?

Check what happens to the tool's copy of the email separately from the plan created from it.

Aurion's source copies of email text, images and attachments have a seven-day retention period and are removed by periodic cleanup. This does not delete the originals in your inbox. Forwarded-mail delivery copies are cleaned after processing. If delivery or cleanup fails, those copies may be kept longer while processing is retried. The events, tasks and reminders your family confirms stay in Aurion. The seven-day source-email rule is not a promise that every account record, backup or AI provider record disappears after seven days. See email retention on /what-is-aurion and the Privacy Policy.

4. Will our family's emails be used to train AI?

Look for a specific answer about private content and generalized AI training. Training and processing are different questions; both deserve an answer.

Aurion does not use your private family content to train generalized AI models. Data from Google, including Gmail, is not sold or used for advertising, and is not used to develop or train generalized AI models. Your content can still be processed by AI services to produce answers and planning suggestions.

5. Where does the information go, and who in the family can see it?

Check which companies process the content, whether processing may happen outside your country, and what other household members will see.

To read an email and suggest a plan, Aurion sends the relevant content to its AI service providers, Amazon Web Services (Amazon Bedrock) and DeepInfra, over encrypted connections. Processing may take place in the United States or another location used by the relevant provider. Providers may keep limited operational or security records. The Privacy Policy names each provider and links to their data terms.

In Aurion, information added to the shared household space may be visible to other members according to household roles and visibility settings. Aurion is meant for adults and families under adult supervision, not for unsupervised use by children under 13.

6. Can I disconnect, export or delete my data?

Check the exit path before connecting an account.

You can disconnect a connected email or calendar account in the Aurion app, and you can also revoke Aurion's access from your Google Account. From Account Security in the app you can request an export of your account data or start account deletion. Some records may remain for a limited period in backups, audit logs, fraud-prevention records, or records we are legally required to keep, as the Privacy Policy explains.

A short checklist for any AI tool

  • Can I forward only the emails I choose, instead of connecting my whole inbox?
  • Is the inbox connection read-only — and do I understand that read-only is not the same as "school emails only"?
  • Does anything go on the calendar without a person approving it?
  • How long are copies of my email kept?
  • Is my family's content used to train AI models, and who processes it?
  • How do I disconnect, export and delete my data — and who in the household will see what is added?

Where Aurion is now

Aurion is in development and not yet for sale. We're inviting a small group of families into the beta, and beta families get Aurion, with a 15.6-inch shared screen. Pricing has not been announced. Joining the beta candidate list is not an order, a paid reservation or a confirmed beta place.

FAQ

Does Aurion read my whole inbox?

You can forward selected emails without connecting your inbox. If you connect a mailbox, access is read-only and can include message content and attachments. Read-only does not mean access is limited to school emails. If you'd rather Aurion only sees school emails, forward just those, or set up a Gmail filter that forwards only your school's senders.

Can Aurion send or delete email?

No. Inbox connections are read-only. Aurion does not send, delete, label or archive anything in your mailbox.

Does my child's school need to do anything?

No. The school does not install or sign up for anything. You forward emails to your dedicated Aurion address, or connect your own inbox.

Will Aurion add things to our calendar on its own?

No. Aurion proposes the steps. Nothing is written to the shared calendar until someone approves.

Does Aurion use my family's information to train AI?

Aurion does not use your private family content to train generalized AI models, and does not use data from Google APIs to develop or train generalized AI models. Content can still be processed by AI providers to produce suggestions.

Where is the data processed?

Relevant connected email content may be sent to AWS Bedrock and DeepInfra over encrypted connections. Processing may take place in the United States or another location used by the relevant provider, which may be outside your country. The privacy policy has the details.
